Pelvic Ultrasound Scans and Chaperones

For pelvic ultrasound appointments, patients will be offered a chaperone by the reception team.

A chaperone provides support during the appointment and acts as a witness to verbal consent. Chaperones are trained to be sensitive to dignity, privacy and confidentiality.

Chaperones are typically present for transvaginal, or internal, ultrasound scans. A family member or friend may be present for support if requested, but they are not usually considered a formal chaperone. Where a formal chaperone is required or offered, this would usually be a trained staff member.

Patients have the right to decline a chaperone. If a chaperone is declined, this will be recorded in the patient notes.

Sonographer Performing An Ultrasound Scan at Stonegate Medical Clinic

What to Expect During an Ultrasound Scan

An ultrasound scan uses sound waves to create images of structures inside the body. It does not use X-rays.

During the appointment, the sonographer will explain the scan and what is involved. A small amount of gel is usually applied to the skin, and a handheld probe is moved over the area being examined.

Some ultrasound scans may require preparation before the appointment. This may include instructions around eating, drinking or attending with a full bladder, depending on the type of scan booked. Any preparation requirements will be explained during the booking process.
